Essay : Interprofessional Education: Integrate Health Education to Achieve the Best Health Outcome

Quality health services become a demand for health care providers in the global era, and quality health service can be achieved with collaboration practice. Now, interprofessional healthcare should collaborate professionally. It’s not about who the better profession is or who the worse profession is. But now it’s time to collaborate profession to achieve the best quality health care.

Professional collaboration is important to increase effectively and quality of health service system. The literature mentions that none of the health professional who can handle the health problem which require experience and ability to manage other professions. Environmental education is the tools strategic to build and develop the professional collaboration. Expected, the education system is not limited, but it in synergy with each other. The concrete thing is implementation of Interprofessional Education (IPE) system.

According to World Health Organization (WHO), Interprofessional Education (IPE) is “The process by which a group of students or workers from the health-related occupations with different backgrounds learn together during certain periods of their education, with interaction as the important goal, to collaborate in providing promotive, preventive, curative, rehabilitative, and other health-related services.”

Why is IPE important to health professional students?
With IPE, health professional student can train themselves in collaborative practice, thus when they have teamwork and doing collaborative practice, they have been able to coordinate and cooperate with other health profession, then they can give an optimal health service and make a better health service outcome.
In Indonesia, In Muhammadiyah Malang University has been integrating education between doctor-pharmacist-nurse students. They have given some case study to analyze according to their profession. Example given, there’s case study about diarrhea, the doctor students are analyzing about their diagnose and pathology of disease, then pharmacist students are analyzing about using drug therapy and its mechanism, and then nurse students are analyzing about nurse’s diagnose and their nursing care plans. Before they met in integrated class, they get on together to discuss the case study.

Then, Interprofessional Education is a challenge. Whether IPE can be included into the curriculum? What should be done before the IPE is applied in the curriculum? First thing is the common perception about patient centered, patient safety, multiprofessional team, also the roles of each profession. Second, planning about integration and systematic of Interprofessional Education and its goal to each profession. Third thing, the IPE implementation, documentation, and each output. And the fourth is development process of IPE in the curriculum.

The goal of interprofessional education is to prepare health professional students for collaborative practice with the attitude, skill and knowledge necessary. The healthcare providers who are good collaborative practitioner should understand that working together is important to increase patient’s health care
